Physical, emotional and spiritual health affect the size of the aura. These auric layers expand and contract depending on those factors.

Kosas: Layers of the Mind

The first field is known as the etheric aura. It vibrates closely to the physical body. This field holds information about your physical health.

A person reading this field may feel physical pain or sensations of pleasure. The emotional layer of the aura extends about one to three inches from the body. This is the field that holds emotions and feelings.

Seven Layers of the Aura

The colors are usually a bright rainbow combination. When negative feelings and emotional blocks are present, this field can appear somewhat muddied. Problems in this aura will have a negative impact at some point in the first and third layers.

The mental, or third layer, of the aura can extend anywhere from three to eight inches from the body. It contains your ideas, thoughts and mental processes.

Usually, bright shades of yellow are associated with this layer. The astral layer, the fourth level, spreads out about one foot.

It represents a bridge to your spiritual realm and is also the doorway to the astral plane. If your spiritual health is good, the colors are vibrant and reflect that of a rainbow. The fifth layer, the etheric template, protrudes about two feet outward. Within this field, there is a blueprint that contains all the forms of the physical world. Because of the negative space it creates, colors can vary. The celestial aura, or sixth field, can extend up to two and a half feet.

This level is connected to the spiritual realm. Communication with those in the spiritual realm takes place here, along with unconditional love and feelings of ecstasy. The colors that appear are a brighter shimmering light in a multitude of opalescent pastel colors. The ketheric template, or seventh layer, can extend to over three feet.

This field surrounds all of the other layers and holds them together. It vibrates at the highest frequencies and is composed of threads of bright shining gold color. It reflects all the experiences and events that your soul has undergone.Yoga is a comprehensive holistic approach to health, happiness, and wellbeing. Rather than just addressing the physical body, yoga ascertains that there are indeed five bodies, five layers of self or being, that must be addressed for overall healing to take place.

Starting from the outermost layer and moving through the layers to the core of the self, each body is made up of increasingly subtler degrees of energy: from the physical body, to the energetic body, to the mental body, to the wisdom body, and finally, to the bliss body. However, unlike a series of Russian dolls, the five bodies cannot be taken apart and separated. These layers are interwoven, interrelated, and interactive—what happens on one level affects all layers of the body.

Therefore, we cannot neglect the more subtle aspects of our beings. If complete happiness and total wellbeing is what we are after, we must pay attention to and care for all layers of our beings. We begin at the outermost layer, the physical body organs, bones, muscle tissue, and skinknown as the annamaya kosha in yoga.

The animating force behind every atom, cell, organ, and body system, prana coordinates every physiological activity, from the pumping of the heart to the elimination of waste. Imbalances or blocks within this energetic body greatly affect the overall function of the physical body.

Prana is closely related to the breath—you receive prana upon the air you breathe. When breath is shallow and sporadic, your prana is also erratic. Many of us have an overactive manomaya kosha that wears on our nervous system and plays out through our emotions. Yoga helps calm our minds and soothe our nervous systems, allowing you to recover from the effects of stress and fatigue on your third body. Your mental body is also where we experience the five senses. Coordinating your breath with your movement brings you present on your mat—synchronizing your physical, energetic, and mental bodies.

However, the next layer, your wisdom body, takes a little more internal awareness that is cultivated over time. Your intuition, conscience, and the reflective aspects of your consciousness are all part of your wisdom body. Here, we develop our awareness and deeper insight into the nature of who we are and how we relate to the world around us.

The practice of yoga helps quiet the mental body so that our wisdom body can be heard and begin to guide us. One simple way to start working with your vijnanamaya kosha is to simply pay attention to any sensations or pulsations taking place internally throughout your practice.Spirituality is observing your own existence. Have you experienced your own body?

Experiencing the various levels of existence - your own body, your breath, your mind, your emotion, and the source of your life - is meditation. Meditation is experiencing the life force and being conscious of it - and this is done effortlessly. Have you noticed - that the mind and body function on completely opposite laws?

In the realm of mind, effortlessness is the key. You cannot remember something by putting effort. The moment you relax the memory comes back. Creativity, intelligence, and memory — all these faculties within us happen effortlessly. But you can build muscles only when you put effort. With meditation, your physiology undergoes a change, and every cell in the body is filled with "prana". You bubble with joy, as the level of "prana" in your body rises.

When you are not feeling so good, or when you are down, unhappy or afraid, observe your prana - it is very shaky. It is the same consciousness that functions as mann mindbuddhi intellectchitta memoryahankaara ego.

In ancient times, people have grouped these four different faculties as Antahkaran Chadushtaya the four-fold inner equipment. How do you listen? The sounds fall on the eardrums - but if the mind is elsewhere, can you hear? You are listening through the faculty in you - that is called the mind.

Similarly, you experience all the other senses - through the mind. Mind gallops towards world of five senses sight, smell, sound, taste, and touch. You may sit quiet — with closed or open eyes.

Understanding the Koshas: The 5 Layers of Self

If your eyes are going all over the place, the mind is not in a meditative state. Only when the mind withdraws from the senses, it is ready for meditation. If you have a positive state of mind you become creative, and successful in anything you do.November 17, Higher levels of consciousness can be achieved with the help of regular practice and training of the mind-body system. In brief, the seven levels of consciousness which make up the path of spiritual development, are:.

The first three states — waking consciousness, deep sleep and the dreaming state of sleep — are known to every adult human being with a functional nervous system. The last four levels — transcendental, cosmic, god and unity consciousness — are usually not available right away. These states become accessible only as one engages in regular practice of meditation.

What are these higher levels like? Here are some essential points from Jerry Freeman, student of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi for over 40 years. To cultivate the ability of the nervous system to sustain that. Eventually, that becomes stabilized and it becomes a permanent state of consciousness which Maharishi called the Cosmic Consciousness. My sublime self is actually that pure, eternal consciousness. My little ego that motors around and feels so important — you discover that oh, that is not what I am!

And yet it is still just one unfoldment, just that first permanent awakening. But because now there is this connection with the deepest within, this creates the capacity to see more deeply. As the perception of the outer world becomes deeper and more subtle, attention goes to more and more pleasing levels — subtler is more pleasing, more unbounded, closer to that pure level where everything is bliss.

The heart can overtake anything. You begin to approach that same silence that you found within yourself at the subtlest level of what you see outside. Any contact, any experience in the material world — even the scolding of a black crow — becomes delightful. It may come out as a deep devotion in a religious sense. It may be in a more generalized sort of way — a heart goes out and is overtaken with the perfection and the beauty of everything that is encountered.

It will always keep on unfolding — in the way of expansion and deepening. In Unity Consciousness, myself is the Self of all. There is only one Self. One discovers that this Atman which was once inner, is actually all encompassing. Everything which is in myself is myself.

The koshas provide a framework for conceptualizing ourselves. Much like the chakra system, the kosha layers come packaged with their own individual physiological function and psychology. In some respects, the kosha layers mirror the psychology of the chakras. For those of you wondering what the individual koshas are and how they relate your being as a whole, below you'll find brief descriptions of each.

The first layer of the koshas represents the physical body, including the skin, muscles, connective tissue, fat and bones. When you pinch the side of your waist and feel the skin and muscle under your fingers, you engage with annamaya kosha. For a lot of people the first layer might be where we spend the most time hanging out, locked in our physical senses. In psychological terms, pranamaya kosha controls our bodily and spiritual rhythm.

The third layer takes us into the deep recesses of the mind, emotions and nervous system. While modern science has developed an acute understanding of the inner working of the brain, the mind, motivations and emotions still retain a mysterious quality.

The manomaya kosha makes up the control panel for the emotional and physical body, sending messages through your brain synapses and the central nervous system.

Diving underneath the sea of emotions in the manomaya kosha, we reach the wisdom body of the fourth kosha —Vijanamaya. Emotions left unchecked by awareness are destructive. The awareness of vijanamaya kosha illuminates our deeper desires and motivation and allows us to see the choice we have in all things.

Instead of simply feeling or acting, we choose to feel or act with intention. Sometimes the intention is simply to move past the emotion into pure sensation and bliss. The fifth and last kosha drops from conscious awareness into the pure and radiant bliss body.

As asana prepares the outer body, yogic breathing turns your attention to the pranic body. Lastly, yogic philosophy provides the tools for bringing awareness to your fluctuating emotional state of mind, so you can embody and radiate health and bliss. In order to explain the intellectual and intuitional capabilities of the human being it is important to understand the functioning of these five kosas. In addition, understanding of the five layers of the mind also helps one in the various spiritual practices which are designed to perfect these layers of the mind. The division of the mind into five layers is similar to the structure of an onion — as one layer is peeled away the next layer is revealed until one reaches the innermost layer.

The outermost layer of the mind is actually the physical body which we can consider to be the sixth layer of the mind. This physical body is formed from the food we eat and is known in Sanskrit as annamaya kosa. By admitting that the body is the base of the mind, Ananda Marga philosophy avoids the duality of mind and body which has troubled some philosophical systems.

Also by accepting the body as an integral part of the mind, the practitioner of Tantra Yoga includes the development of the body in the program of spiritual development. The need to integrate a concern for the body in an over all program to develop the mind is demonstrated in the story of Gautama, the Buddha, who in his final quest to attain enlightenment vowed to sit in meditation until he reached his goal.

He sat for several days without eating or sleeping, but his body gradually weakened until he was no longer able to maintain the position of meditation. Fortunately, a young woman saw the plight of Gaotama and brought him a bowl of food. He ate the food, and with renewed strength continued in his arduous spiritual practice and after several more days realized his true self. Beyond the annamaya kosa we find the first non-physical layer of the mind which is known as kamamaya kosa.

Kama means desire and it is this layer which controls and guides our relationship with the exterior world. The work of the sensory and motor organs eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin, limbs, etc.

It is this layer of the mind which is at work during our normal waking consciousness. It senses the exterior world and helps our motor organs to react to the world. If someone sees a piece of cake and then desires to eat it and finally if his or her motor organs begin to carry out this desire, then we have a typical operation of the kamamaya kosa. Going further into the mind we find another layer known as the manomaya kosa which is also known as the subtle mind.

This is the layer which governs memory. All memory is stored here, and we can recall a previous experience due to the capacity of this layer. An example of its operation is found in a university student who reads many books in preparation for an examination. At the time of the examination there may be one or two questions and it is the manomaya kosa which recollects the diverse facts from all the books and helps to synthesize them into a coherent response.

The subconscious mind is active during sleep while the conscious mind kamamaya kosa is inactive. Dreams take place in this layer. A further function of the manomaya kosa is that pleasure and pain are experienced here.

Unlike many schools of Western psychology, Ananda Marga philosophy states that the mind does not end with the subconscious layer.

This causal mind is concerned with the intuitive capabilities of the human being, but due to the constant activity of the conscious and sub conscious minds, it is rarely experienced by most human beings.

This is perhaps why its study has been neglected in most schools of psychology. This causal mind has also been called the collective unconscious by Carl Jung because all the knowledge of past, present and future is lying in it. The information in the causal mind is not limited to the memory and experience of the individual as is the data in the subconscious mind.

It is because of the existence of this causal mind that we can explain the extraordinary experiences of prophets, psychics, clairvoyants and others who have predicted events of the future or who have known things beyond the limits of their sense organs.
